Guided Tour to PC*Miler
Guided Tour: View Map Quality Graphics
Next, let’s view your route on a map:
-
In the Map menu, select Frame > Route 1 to frame the route you just
ran on the map. You can resize the RouteMap window if you like. The gas pump
icons indicate fueling stations. The view of the map is zoomed out, so
multiple fueling stations are visible. (HINT: To hide fueling station icons
for less clutter, set the minimum level of detail – see step 4 below.)

-
Select Legends from the map menu and remove the checkmark from Road
Legend. The Road Legend will disappear from the map. Try moving the Scale of
Miles around: click, hold and drag it.
-
Use the Zoom In and Zoom Out buttons to adjust the zoom level. (You
could also click the mouse on the map and drag a box around an area to zoom
in.)

-
Use the More Detail and Less Detail buttons to adjust the detail
level without affecting the zoom level. Keep clicking to see all the
available settings. The zoom level and detail level are displayed in the
title bar of the RouteMap window; for example, “Detail Level 5 of 12 [+1]”
means the zoom level is 5 and the detail level is one level up from the
default.

-
Use the right mouse Map menu to add more road labels to the map:
click your right mouse button in the map window and select Pick Label >
Label Roads, then click on one or more unlabeled roads on the map. To remove
a label, click on it. NOTE: In any mode, you can still use the mouse to drag
a box around an area to zoom in.

-
To shift your view of the map in any direction, you can select Pan > from the
Map menu and
choose a direction, or use the hidden scroll bar. To activate the scroll bar,
touch any edge of
the map window with your cursor. Click on it to move the map incrementally in
the direction
indicated by the middle arrow, or click and hold to pan. You may also click, or
click and
hold, the corner arrows in each scroll bar to navigate in the indicated
direction.

-
For an alternate way to shift the view, select Map menu > Drag Map. Then place
your cursor
on the map, hold down the left mouse button, and drag in any direction.
-
Individual features such as stop names, cities, roads, and road shields can be
hidden from
view on the map. Select Features from the right mouse map menu to open the Map
Features dialog.
Features can be shown or hidden on the map by checking/unchecking them on the
list in this
dialog. The order in which feature layers are drawn can be changed as well. For
example,
to have the routes that PC*MILER generates draw over all other features, you
would
highlight “Routes” and click To Top.

-
Click Cancel to continue the Tour.
